Ashton Community Trust

Established in 1991 in North Belfast, the Ashton Community Trust is a non-denominational community regeneration project formed by local residents to tackle poverty and deprivation in a district of high unemployment at the heart of some of the most confrontational areas in Northern Ireland. The Trust’s mission is to ‘promote positive change and improve the quality of life of the North Belfast community’ in an area where 55% of the population are economically inactive and where many young people leave school without formal qualifications.

The organisation exists to promote social and economic inclusion for everyone in the community and where required, to assist them in gaining appropriate employment. Ashton Community Trust has a long track record of working closely with the local community and over the years the organisation has developed strong links with local community groups, schools and employers. The organisation acts as a multi purpose focal point for the local community, volunteers, public and private sectors and is a recognised training centre for a wide range of qualifications. The Trust is widely recognised as an example of best practice and has received a prestigious BURA award for best practice in Regeneration and is part of OFMDFM’s Best Practice scheme. In 2008 it won the regional award for Enterprising Britain. It has ISO accreditation and has achieved gold standard in the Northern Ireland Quality Awards “Steps to Excellence”.
